Teamwork and unselfish play lead to Rye win

Goals haven’t been hard to come by for the Rye boys soccer team over the last few games, and Monday’s tilt against Eastchester proved the rule, rather than the exception.

Rye and Eastchester square off in a league contest on Oct. 6. The Garnets topped the Eagles 4-1.

On Oct. 6, the Garnets traveled to take on the Eagles and brought a whole lot of offense with them, as they scored early and often to down their hosts 4-1. For Rye the win represents yet another solid showing as the team streaks towards the postseason, one that should give other teams pause as the playoffs approach.

Chief among the Garnets’ strengths this year has been its unselfish play, explained senior attacker Felix Wismer. Wismer notched the first goal of Monday’s game, but Alec Dodge Terra (two goals) and Connor Dehmer followed suit as Rye’s balance again paid dividends.

Eastchester got on the board with time running out, when David Carrera converted on a PK opportunity.

“We’re really playing together as a team this year; Alec scored twice, I had one, and Connor got the other one, and he’s just a freshman, which is awesome,” said Wismer. That just comes from our sense of community, which is something our coaches made it about from our morning workouts over the summer.”

Dodge Terra concurred, noting that there were no questions about Rye’s ultimate goal this year.

“Everybody puts the effort in in practices and that shows in the games,” said the junior. “Everyone has just one objective, and that’s to win sectionals, regionals and states.”

So far, Rye appears to be well on their way to making a deep postseason run. As of press time, the team sits at 9-1-2 on the year, good enough to put them atop the Class A standings. On Saturday afternoon, the Garnets handed previously-unbeaten Pleasantville its first loss of the year, something that Wismer said served to further motivate the squad.

“We beat and undefeated team and we felt like we were the better team right from warmups,” said Wismer. “We believe we are the best team in the section and we take that approach right from the get-go.”

Eastchester (1-8-2) has struggled as of late, but has shown some positive signs, with their lone win coming against a good Keio team on Sept. 20. The Garnets, on the other hand, will look to close out the regular season with a number of tough games, including back-to-back rematches with Pleasantville and Keio scheduled for Oct. 16 and Oct. 18.

“I feel like one thing we need to work on a bit is discipline, I know I got caught up a little bit today, and need to do a better job,” said Wismer. “We also need to do a better job of thinking on the run, but today we stepped in front of the ball on free kicks a lot so that was a good sign.”
