Donohue hits milestone, Broncos stay perfect

The Bronxville football team put the finishing touches on a perfect season on Friday afternoon with perhaps its most dominant showing of the season, a 54-0 drubbing of Rye Neck. And even though the spring campaign might not have ended with the Broncos’ hoisting a Section I trophy, there are few that would argue that the Broncos did not emerge as the most dominant team in the Cla

saw the team earn lopsided victories in every outing. Over the course of the season, Bronxville posted four shutouts while outscoring opponents—which included the 2019 Class C champions and runners-up—by a massive 256-22 margin.

Senior running back Henry Donohue explained that even though a lack of a traditional postseason tournament meant that the Broncos wouldn’t be recognized as champions, per se, there is no doubt in the team’s mind that they are the rightful owners of that title.

“Every game we played, we felt like there was no other team that could stand with us,” Donohue said. “It may not be official, but we feel that we are the Class C champs.”

Donohue had another stellar game for Bronxville on Friday and reached a milestone in the win, breaking the 2,000-yard mark on a 15-yard touchdown run in the first half.

“By the end of last year I knew that I needed 900 or so more yards, but I knew that the line and my coaches had a better idea of what I needed today and they were going to feed me early on,” Donohue said. “Today it was perfect, reaching that mark.”

That he’d even get the chance to challenge for the milestone was something that Donohue didn’t take for granted, however.

After COVID-19 protocols led to the cancelation of the football season last fall, the senior captain said he and his teammates were simply grateful for the chance to strap on their helmets this spring.

“We were just so happy to be able to play together and happy with the way we performed,” Donohue said. “I love these guys and these coaches and this was absolutely amazing.”

And although Donohue headlines a number of graduating seniors, he is confident that the lessons learned this season will only serve to make the Broncos’ returners an even more formidable team next fall.

“These guys know how to win because they’ve been here,” he said. “We’re graduating a large class of guys, but we have a lot of talent coming back and I think they’re going to be really tough.”
